Simone Uwan, MD

Dr. Simone Eastman Uwan was born in Guyana South America and migrated to the United States with her family in 1984.  She had a love for science and math and attended “Clara Barton High School for Health Professions” in Brooklyn, NY. She was awarded a scholarship to attend Barnard College at Columbia University in Manhattan, NY. There she majored in Biology and pre-medical Sciences. It was during her college years that she was diagnosed with Sickle Cell disease, even though she had active symptoms all her life.

Because of the cold climate, after graduating from college Dr. Uwan moved to California where she was accepted to Stanford University school of medicine in 1995. There she won both a “Medical Scholars” award and a “Pfeiffer Scholars” award for research in Thalassemia with the Stanford Hematology Research Department under Dr. Stanley Schrier. This research was a collaboration with Dr. Elliott Vichinsky, a well- known and leading researcher in Sickle Cell disease. Dr. Eastman Uwan did an Internship in 1997 at Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute with Dr. Vichinsky’s research team, studying early signs of Acute Chest Syndrome in the blood of patients with Sickle Cell disease.

For several summers during medical school, Doctor Uwan would participate in a week long Comprehensive Sickle Cell camp, where she was a mentor to patients and a part of the Medical Staff caring for her Sickle Cell community.

Dr. Uwan was accepted to a Stanford affiliated Family Practice residency program, and in 2004, during her senior year of residency, she worked with Dr. Vichinsky’s clinical Medicine team, treating patients at the Comprehensive Center for Sickle Cell disease in Oakland California, supervised by Ward Hagar, director of the Adult Sickle Cell program.

Throughout her career as Family Practice physician, she has had the honor of caring for sickle cell patients with the compassion they often long for. While her Sickle Cell disease has caused an early retirement from her clinical practice, her life is vibrant. She counsels women within her non-denominational church community, where she also receives tremendous support.

She also has developed an active presence on social media where she teaches a global audience about Sickle Cell. She created a group called “Bedtime Stories With Doctor Uwan” on Facebook where she teaches even from her bed (hence the name) to make sure that every Sickle Cell survivor becomes a Sickle cell Thriver by covering many health management strategies not covered in the textbooks. Her teaching videos can be found on her YouTube channel “Doctor Simone says”

Dr. Uwan has also become a number ONE Bestselling author of the book “A Doctor In a Patient’s Body” and is currently finishing her second book entitled “ALL Rise; The Sickle Cell Community vs. The Medical establishment”
